But go a little further afield – even a little local shop – and you might be in luck, tracking down the utterly messy, fragrant and moreish variety, the Alphonso.
It has a short season and may cost you a bit more than the normal variety but its flavour is a world apart. Be prepared – kitchen roll is a must – and peel back the skin and sink your teeth in – the flesh gets sharper the closer you get to the stone, providing a sublime sweet through to just-sour flavour profile.
