The Great British Bake Off will return for its sixth series in August. In news that is sure to delight viewers, the increasingly popular baking show is confirmed to air on BBC One from Wednesday 5 August at 8pm.

BBC has already begun to whet the appetite of viewers with an amusing trailer set to the theme tune of the Sound of the Music, which sees Mary Berry singing, "The hills are alive with the smell of baking".

She will once again be joined by fellow judge Paul Hollywood, while Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins will return as hosts.

Mary has starred in the show since it started in 2010 and has no intention of slowing down despite celebrating her 80th birthday in March.

"The Bake Off for me is an absolute doddle – I know my subject, I know about cakes," she told The Telegraph after reaching the milestone birthday. "My aim is to get everyone in Britain enjoying baking as much as I do."

It appears she has been successful in her mission; 12.3million viewers tuned in to watch Nancy Birtwhistle crowned as the Bake Off winner in October – a bigger audience than the 12.1 million viewers that the World Cup final attracted three months earlier.

The series has also amassed scores of celebrity fans with Keira Knightley admitting in October that she had tried to skip the premiere of her film The Imitation Game because she didn't want to miss the Bake Off final.

The show spawned a successful spin off, The Great Comic Relief Bake Off, which saw famous faces including Jonathan Ross, Gok Wan and beauty blogger-turned internet sensation Zoe Sugg, also known as Zoella strive for baking success, with the crown eventually taken by comedian Victoria Wood.
