LINDA EVANGELISTA RETURNS TO THE CATWALK

Dolce & Gabbana gave a characteristically impressive show at Milan Fashion Week on Sunday, by bringing out the modelling world's big guns. Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Eva Herzigova were all on hand to give their catwalk that supermodel charisma we remember from the early 90s.

A collection of wonderfully masculine pinstripe suits were the stars of their new range, as fashion's most famous double-act proved they still produce sexier cuts than anyone else in the game. The fall line was also brimming with the kind of tailoring trickery we have come to expect from the two designers. Slit elbows and button-detailing on shoulders gave a cheeky individuality to their formal wear, while the funkier items included tiny miniskirts complementing huge plastic jackets.

Emporio Armani meanwhile took a step back in time with a range of 1920s-themed mini-skirts. Their flirtatious lines were matched with opaque black tights and cropped fur jackets. The designer also gave tuxedo trousers a feminine appeal by making them dangerously low-waisted and flared at the ankle. Actress Milla Jovovich made a return to her modelling roots, giving the show one more touch of glamour.

Gucci's Tom Ford also caused quite a stir, albeit in a rather more understated manner. His catwalk, which was smothered in white rose petals, made a beautiful setting for his equally elegant gowns. Wide corsets were the central theme, though everything from ankle-length evening dresses to gabardine white trench coats were also on display. The iconic label has proven, once again, that even thick woollen overcoats can look sexy if you know how to cut them.

"I really want to find a Gucci season I can hate, but this was yet another collection I thought was the best I've seen so far," admitted one New York critic.
