Opening a breast cancer research unit in London this week, Naomi Campbell was lending her profile to a cause close to her heart. She revealed that such facilities have special significance for her as her mother Valerie, who joined the British supermodel at the inauguration, is in remission from the disease.

"It just made me more aware," said the 38-year-old beauty of the moment her mum was diagnosed, in 2005. She told medical staff and supporters at charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer, which is funding the £4.2 million unit at St Guy's Hospital for five years, they have 18 months before they know whether Valerie receives the all clear.

While at the centre the pair modelled a diamond and white gold pin in the familiar breast cancer ribbon format which will be sold to raise funds for the charity. The £7,500 Betty Jackson brooch is available, made-to-order through Avon.
