A pair of Hollywood stars – Halle Berry and Robert Downey Jr – have officially called it quits on their respective marriages.
Six months after separating from her husband of three years, R&B singer and Glitter star Eric Benet, Oscar-winner Halle has filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason behind the break-up. In the petition, the actress asks to "terminate the court's ability to award spousal support to respondent (Benet)."
The papers don't reveal the Hollywood star's intentions regarding her 12-year-old adopted stepdaughter India – Eric's child from a previous relationship – whose mother died in a car crash when she was just 15 months old. Halle's attorney, Neal Hersh, declined to give any details, but did say, "It's begun amicably. We hope it's going to stay that way."
Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr has also taken the final step, filing for divorce from former wife Deborah Falconer. The two, who have a son called Indio together, wed in 1992 after a 42-day courtship, and separated in 1996. "This is more or less just a formality," said the actor's publicist, Alan Nierob.
The end of the marriage means that the Ally McBeal star is now free to wed his fiancee, film producer Susan Levin, whom he met last year while working alongside Halle on the thriller Gothika.
