Spooks fans won't need much 'persuading' to watch Rupert Penry-Jones in action as TV's newest romantic hero early next year. He is following in the footsteps of fellow costume-drama hunks Colin Firth and Toby Stephens by portraying one of literature's best-loved characters in the upcoming adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion.
The small screen heart-throb, who stars as the dashing Captain Wentworth in the ITV drama, gave fans a taste of what's to come as he filmed scenes in Lyme Regis, Dorset. The period piece is a world away from his role as MI5 agent Adam Carter in Spooks, which has made him a household name in the UK. Sporting breeches, top hat and tails, he was clearly taking the transformation in his stride, however.
London-born Rupert plays the long-time beau of the book's heroine Anne Elliot, portrayed by Fingersmith actress Sally Hawkins. But in real-life his heart belongs to Ballykissangel beauty Dervla Kirwan who gave birth to their son Peter this April. They also have a daughter, Florence, born in 2001.
