A-list laughs at MTV Movie Awards

A roll call of Hollywood's biggest stars thumbed their nose at the pomp and ceremony that goes hand-in-hand with most award galas when they turned out for some boisterous fun at the MTV movie awards. Fantastic Four bombshell Jessica Alba, who took on the hosting duties, did her best to keep proceedings on track as a series of Tinseltown's favourite performers took to the stage to collect their unusually titled trophies.

Perhaps the most memorable moment came when funnyman Jim Carrey picked up the "silver bucket of excellence" lifetime achievement award. The Canadian star, who was dressed in white, had brought along a 60-strong entourage of angels for his moment of glory. "Why do so many struggle with fame when I am able to float effortlessly on the upper edges of the statusphere," he joked.

And Brokeback Mountain's Jake Gyllenhaal was on equally self-effacing form, keeping an extra wide distance between himself and presenter Justin Timberlake when the singer handed him the prize for best onscreen kiss.

Real-life couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who were honoured with the gong for best fight scene thanks to their explosive interaction in Mr & Mrs Smith, were too busy with new baby Shiloh to attend the prizegiving. "Angelina and Brad are stuck in traffic," quipped Irish heart-throb Colin Farrell as he announced their victory.

British beauty Kate Beckinsale was in the running for best hero, but she remained realistic about her chances of winning the trophy. "If I wasn't nominated in the same category as Harry Potter, and I didn't have a seven-year-old at home, it might be more exciting, but I know nobody's rooting for me in my house," she said. No doubt little Lily will be rather more supportive of her mum's next project, as the 32-year-old is currently writing a script for a children's movie.

Among the other famous faces in attendance for the bash were Sandra Bullock, Keanu Reeves, Samuel L Jackson and Christina Aguilera. But it was rubber-faced comic Jim Carrey who best summed up the anarchic atmosphere of the event. "It's always a blast," said the 44-year-old. "I like coming down to MTV, hanging out with a lot of young people and going nuts. It's a great, great energy."
