Tom Cruise struggled to put into words his sorrow for friends John Travolta and Kelly Preston when asked about the tragic passing of their son Jett, who died last week.

Dad-of-three Tom was being interviewed for American talk show The View when he was asked for his thoughts.

"I don’t have the words for it. It's horrific," he said. "Here you have a man, both of them doting parents, they're wonderful people, and, they…" Unable to finish his sentence the Valkyrie actor then fell silent.

The star also recalled personal memories of the 16-year-old on the show, which airs on Friday. "I remember when Jett was born," 46-year-old Tom said. "I saw him when he was just a few months old... And John just adored him."

John and Kelly, who have an eight-year-old daughter Ella Bleu, returned to their family home in Florida on Monday with their son's ashes. On Thursday a private memorial service was held in the grounds of their LA estate for the youngster, who passed away at the family's holiday home in the Bahamas after suffering a seizure.

John, Kelly and Ella said their final goodbyes to Jett at a private memorial service at their LA home. "Jett was the most wonderful son that two parents could ever ask for and lit up the lives of everyone he encountered," said the Oscar-winning actor on his website. "We are heartbroken that our time with him was so brief"
