Sunday night's Academy Awards ceremony has generated special interest in Kate Winslet's Reading hometown.

As the ultimate local lass 'done good' Kate is to be honoured by the Berkshire town by having a street near to her childhood home named after her.

And as the local community gets behind The Reader actress, who is nominated for her sixth Academy Award, old photographs have surfaced of the Hollywood star at her former theatre school.

In the image young Kate, waving a glittering bowler hat in the air and dressed in a silver leotard, is snapped sitting on the stairs of the Redroofs School in Maidenhead with her classmates.

On the other side of the Atlantic, preparations are in full swing in Los Angelesfor Hollywood's biggest night of the year.

The red carpet has been rolled out outside the Kodak Theatre ready to welcome this year's silver screen stars, while the giant Oscar statues lining the approach to it wait to be unwrapped.
