Her off-duty look is London mum on the school run. But when the sun goes down Gwyneth Paltrow releases her inner fashionista and experiments with the latest trends.

The 37-year-old actress was working next season's metallic look as she joined pal Valentino at a New York party on Tuesday.

She was a shining example of the Spring/Summer 2010 catwalk trend in a silver-hued trench coat by funky Manhattan designers Alice + Olivia.

The futuristic jacket, which retails at £334, was teamed with a pair of £1,500 Christian Louboutin Bridget cage boots and a beaded clutch bag and bracelet, both by Valentino. She wore the coat over a midnight blue mini-dress.

It may not be a look that everyone can carry off, but for the mum-of-two - who garnered praise from style pundits for her choice of outfit – it was a winner.

Gywneth's edgy look was a departure from her everyday garb. The Iron Man actress usually sticks to muted colours, and goes for comfortable flat shoes when not on red carpet duty.
