Brad Pitt made his first public appearance this week following the announcement earlier this month that his fiancée Angelina Jolie had undergone a preventative double mastectomy. Brad, 49, was in good spirits as he surprised fans at a local cinema in New Jersey on Wednesday by showing up unannounced at a screening for his new zombie film World War Z.

The Fight Club star gave out t-shirts and thanked the fans for coming to what he called "the most intense thing you're going to see all summer"."They said we got to do a showing in the city and I said okay, but we can't do it without showing it to the people who we made the film for," he said, adding: "so we decided to do it in no other place than Jersey. "We've got a monster film, it's epic, scary as hell and I guarantee it's the most intense thing you will see all summer." Earlier the same day, Brad had hosted a star-studded screening at New York City's Museum of Modern Art where the audience included Bruce Willis and his wife Emma Heming, Morgan Freeman, Ashley Olsen and Katie Couric. Sting and wife Trudie Styler were also at the event and were seen having fun as they chatted to other guests.

Dressed all in black with his hair pulled into a ponytail, Brad Pitt was introduced to the VIP crowd by Paramount head Brad Grey.On stage, the star told them: "Thank you. Thank you all very much. We've been on this thing for so long and it's so nice to see friends out in the audience and so many others that I admire who are here tonight – I'm a little bit shy about it. So thank you very much. It means a lot to us that you would give up your night for us. "Brad Pitt 's appearance comes after his fiancée Angelina Jolie revealed that she had undergone a preventative double mastectomy, enduring three months of medical procedures. But despite the recent tough times, the actor says he is the happiest he has ever been. "I have very few friends. I have a handful of close friends and I have my family and I haven't known life to be any happier," Brad told Esquire magazine in his first print interview since Angelina's surgery.
