"I wouldn’t do my life any differently, but having lived through it… for a teenager or somebody in their early 20s, is a very strange thing,” she told Elle magazine.
Asked if she would encourage a daughter to enter the acting world, as Keira did when she only ten, she said: "Oh, 100%, I’d absolutely tell her not to. I would 150 million trillion per cent be totally discouraging."
She went on to add: "Teenage years should be done privately. You should be going out and getting unbelievably drunk, getting into ridiculous situations, making mistakes. That’s what that time of life is about and we should do that privately."
Keira is now a hugely succesful actress, who broke out in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise alongside Johnny Depp, and garnered critical acclaim for a host of period dramas including Pride and Prejudice, Atonement, and Anna Karenina.
She is also a spokeswoman for Chanel.
The brunette beauty can next be seen singing in Begin Again, a dramatic comedy which follows Mark Ruffalo's dejected music business executive who forms a bond with a Keira's young singer-songwriter new to Manhattan.
It also stars Adam Levine from Maroon 5, CeeLo Green, and James Corden.
Keira was also recently one of several actresses, including Salma Hayek and Gillian Anderson, who wrote to British Prime Minister David Cameron about ensuring female’s rights in Afghanistan are protected for International Women’s Day.
The actresses acknowledged the occasion which fell on 8 March, by urging the politician to help make a difference to the minimal progress that has been made over the last 12 years in the country. The country is holding presidential elections this year plus troops are being withdrawn. While women are increasing upholding their rights, provisions are being put in place to ensure they aren’t made a negative target.
Begin Again is out in the UK on 11 July.
