An American actor, director, producer, and writer, Tom Hanks has been on the Hollywood A-list for over 30 years.
The winner of two Oscars and two Golden Globes
, Tom rose to fame in the 1980s after he moved to New York City in 1979 to work on the stage.
There he landed an agent and work on several TV shows before moving to Los Angeles where he took the lead role in a film titled Splash!
went on to become a box office hit, and he became known as a comedic and serious actor after roles in Nothing in Common, Big
, and The Bonfire of the Vanities.
Tom's era of film success came in the 1990s, first with the 1993 romcom Sleepless In Seattle
with Meg Ryan, and then Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Apollo 13,
and then as the voice of Woody in the Disney/Pixar film Toy Story.
Tom became only the second actor to ever win back-to-back Best Actor Oscars for his roles in Philadelphia and Forrest Gump,
and in the late 1990s he turned his hand to directing and producing, including what is now considered one of the greatest war films ever made, Saving Private Ryan.

Tom later reteamed with Meg for another romcom, You've Got Mail
, before taking on the solo project, Castaway
, for which he won a Golden Globe.
Throughout the 2000s Tom continued to produce and direct many project including the acclaimed miniseries Band of Brothers,
as well as taking on the controversial The Da Vinci Code,
and becoming Vice-President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science.
Over 30 years after leaving New York City for Hollywood Tom finally made his Broadway debut in 2013,
where he was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor.
In 2014 he garnered his fifth Oscar nomination for the hostage drama Captain Phillips
Tom married Samantha Lewes in 1978 and the couple have two children together including actor Colin Hanks. In 1988 Tom married his Bosom Buddies co-star Rita Wilson
. Tom has two grand-children.
