Born in London, Michelle was a member of the National Youth Theatre and made her professional debut in 2004 in the stage adaptation of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials.
In 2008 Michelle was nominated for her first Evening Standard Award for her supporting role in Pygmalion which transferred to the West End following a hugely successful run in Bath. The actress followed it up in 2009 with a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the Olivier Awards for Burnt in the Sun.
Michelle's TV career began with supporitng roles throughout the late 2000's but it was Julian Fellowes' Downton Abbey, a period drama which followed the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants.
Starring as Lady Mary Crawley, Michelle won acclaim for her performance, and has so far received three Emmy nominations and one Golden Globe.
Her first big screen role was in 2011's Hanna, and in 2014 she appeared alongside Liam Neeson in the action thriller Non-Stop.
Speaking to HELLO! of her performance, Michelle said: "It was brilliant to work on an action thriller, and to work on a set for two months in that kind of environment.
"I'm fascinated by how films work, and how visually something can work on screen and how it's done behind-the-scenes."
