EastEnders bosses are keeping extremely tight-lipped about the Lucy Beale murder plot – to the extent that not even members of the cast know who killed the rebellious character. Jake Wood, who plays Max Branning on the BBC soap, has admitted that everyone has been left guessing as to whodunit.

Lucy Beale's killer will be revealed as part of the show's 30th anniversary celebrations, which will see some episodes filmed live and some pre-recorded, to ensure that no spoilers are unveiled.

The actor or actress who plays the killer themselves probably won't find out they've done it until the day, Jake said.

Jake Wood's character Max Branning is one of Lucy Beale's murder suspects

"I don't think we'll find out until the night," he told BBC Radio 2. "I guess whoever did it will find out an hour or half an hour before so I have no idea."

At the time of Lucy's death, Jake's character Max was having an affair with the rebellious blonde beauty. He is still one of the suspects, alongside his daughter Abi, Lucy's twin brother Peter and Lucy's father Ian.

"There's a secret as well between Max and his daughter Abi [Lorna Fitzgerald] but I don't know what that secret is so hopefully I'll find out in the next couple of weeks," said Jake, 42.

The murderer will be revealed on the Friday of the anniversary week, which kicks off on Monday 16 February.

"I got the scripts for that Friday and about 90 per cent of it was censored so I don't know what's going on, it's all top secret," said Jake. "I've got no idea when they're handing that out and it's just exciting no one knows whodunit and all the cast are trying to guess as much as anyone else."

Speaking previously about the explosive storyline, EastEnders bosses warned fans that they would be keeping a firm grip on the scripts and spoilers.

"After a captivating year of drama in 2014, EastEnders will top this in February 2015 with the most ambitious anniversary any soap has attempted," said BBC One controller Charlotte Moore.

"Live week allows us to keep loads of secrets from the cast, crew and the audience until the very last minute. With shocking reveals and unguessable twists it's going to be a week that will change Albert Square forever."
