Revealed: Why Sue Perkins is missing her first GBBO episode in six years

Great British Bake Off presenter Sue Perkins will not beappearing in Wednesday's episode of the BBC show, producers have confirmed. TheTV star was unable to take part in filming in April because of a family bereavement,according to the Telegraph. She later recorded some voiceover material as wellas a pre-recorded sequence, and will return in next week’s programme.

It's the first time that Sue, 46, has missed an episode ofGBBO since it first began back in 2010.

A preview of the show sees co-host Mel Giedroyc taking thehelm without her onscreen partner by her side. "Welcome to week two in theBake Off tent," she tells the 11 remaining contestants. "One baker has gone,they're not coming back. Sue is also gone, but she will be back."

A spokeswoman for the show confirmed: "Sue was not able tojoin the team in the tent this week, but she returns next week."

The 2016 series of GBBO started with a bang last week as11.2 million people tuned in to see 12 new contestants step into the Bake Offtent for the first time – around one million more viewers than last year's launch show.

Jane Beedle was named the first star baker of the series,while Lee Banfield was the first to leave after struggling with his bakes, andcoming second from bottom in the Jaffa Cake challenge.

This week it's a biscuit-themed episode, and for a secondweek running the bakers are struck by a number of mishaps, with several oftheir showstopper bakes – which feature elaborately constructed structures –collapsing.
