Warner Bros. are planning to release a new film based on Roald Dahl's iconic character Willy Wonka, Variety reports. The upcoming movie will brought to the big screen by Harry Potter producer David Heyman, and written by The Secret Life Of Pets' Simon Rich.

Children’s author Roald penned two novels featuring Wonka - 1964's Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and the 1972 sequel, Charlie And The Great Glass Elevator. The beloved character was famously portrayed by the late Gene Wilder in the iconic 1971 movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factor, and later by Johnny Depp in Tim Burton’s 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

According to the publication, sources claim the new film "will not be an origin tale, but a standalone movie focused on Wonka and his early adventures".

A new film is being planned around Roald Dahl's iconic character Willy Wonka

If the reboot is a hit, "it seems likely that characters like Charlie could be seen in future instalments of a possible franchise."

The original tale followed Charlie's adventures when he wins a golden ticket to see the weird and wonderful Wonka Chocolate Factory. But beyond the gates astonishment awaits, the five lucky winners discover not everything is as sweet as it seems.

The reboot will reportedly be brought to the big screen by Harry Potter producer David Heyman

David, who worked on the Harry Potter franchise as well as the upcoming Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, will produce the upcoming movie alongside Michael Siegel - who is the manager of the Dahl estate - while Saturday Night Fever 's Kevin McCormick will take helm as executive producer.
