Harrison Ford found worldwide fame in the 1970s as Han Solo in the international smash hit Star Wars.

Although the film would come to define much of Harrison's career the 72-year-old has remained one of the most popular Hollywood actors, with a wide range of work.Born in 1942, Harrison only took up acting in his final year of college to overcome his shyness. He later travelled to Los Angeles where he took on voice work and bit parts.He soon trained as a carpenter to support his family and became a door hand for The Doors before being hired to build cabinets for director George Lucas. It was then that Harrison was cast in his lead role for the 1970s cult teen film American Graffiti.

This one job would change Harrison's life as George would ask Harrison to audition for his new sci-fi film Star Wars.  Harrison would star in both sequels, and he cemented his action man status as Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark. 

He went on to star in the sequels for the Indiana Jones franchise.In 1985 Harrison received his first Oscar nomination for Witness and also went on to star in some of the most memorable films of the 90s including The Fugitive and Air Force One.

One of Hollywood's more private actors, Harrison has four children from two previous marriages. He is now married to actress Calista Flockhart after they met at the 2002 Golden Globes. The couple have an adopted son called Liam.In April 2014 it was confirmed that Harrison would reprise his role in Star Wars for the hotly anticipated seventh film. In June however, he was crashed by a hydraulic lift on set and it was later revealed that he would be off set for several weeks. 

A staunch conservationist, Harrison is vice-chair of Conservation International and has a species of spider and a species of ant named after him.
