Surprises and sweet elegance in London's fashion extravaganza

From edgy to understated cool, London Fashion Week has never felt more British.

Vivienne Westwood kicked off with a real explosion of colour where fully painted faces were no less bold than the clothes. From pea-green to bright blues, these weren't quite the typical glowing bases of models strutting the catwalk.

In keeping with this year's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, Toni & Guy also fixed the models with wildly permed wigs reportedly inspired by Queen Elizabeth II.

Not all artists were as extreme as the eccentric British designer. The catwalks of Nicole Fahri, Alice Temperley and Erdem were immersed in pastel powders and sleek locks that carried elegance into the balance of this weird and wonderful week of fashion.

Going Green
Vivienne Westwood made a stand wearing hot pants, a t-shirt boasting the words 'Climate Revolution' and a drawn-on eye patch and moustache. Models' faces were painted bright colours, inlcuding green, to drive the environmental statement home

Flawless porcelain skin, painted ruby lips and strokes of eyeliner gave the models of Issa and Vivienne Westwood essences of the orient. Finish off the look with a sleek up-do decorated with flowers to really get into character

Matte Manes
For real London street style get a Sixties syle bouffant with backcombed roots and brushed up layers. Team with a classic red lip and finish with mattifying hair powder

Bright Eyes
Violet purples, electric blues and bottle greens. Keep the rest of your face make-up minimal to let your eyes really pop with these colourful smudged liners

Sweet Cheeks and Lips
Bring back fresh youthfulness with sugarcoated lip-glosses and peachy cheeks. Don't worry too much about blending these soft colours this season. A bit of blusher in a round effect on the apples of your cheeks will enhance the girly effect of these shades

Glossy locks
With not a hair out of place, the models of Nicole Fahri and Alice Temperley were the leading ladies of beauty. Whether you're wearing your hair up or down, the secret to perfecting elegant evening hair is to maintain the shine with light-reflecting products that will catch everyone's eye

Retro Shades
Mix up your oversized sunnies with colourful frames and old-school shapes. Whites and pastels will really draw attention to your features and brighten up any outfit
