Four steps to Katy Perry’s stunning updo…

She may be all over the papers at the moment thanks to her relationship with Russell Brand. But Katy Perry is still making waves in her own right – not least from her appearance at the MTV European Music Awards.

For one of her looks on the night, she appeared dressed up as an old-style Hollywood movie star complete with a stunning updo that made her look as graceful and glam as Audrey Hepburn. Pantene Pro-V stylist Danilo dressed Katy’s hair for the night and told us how to recreate the look:

  1. Step 1 - Divide hair into sections and apply volumising mousse to the roots of each section, before blowdrying smooth over a round brush.
  2. Step 2 - All but the sides and fringe section were curled with curling tongs to create fullness and shape from which to build the updo. The hair was allowed to cool for 30 minutes to make sure it retained the shape of each curl.
  3. Step 3 - Those sections were brushed out to create a masse of hair, perfect for building a high shape that lasted throughout the night. They were then pulled back tightly at the sides and drawn into a ponytail at the crown. The tail was then folded around the base at which it was tied, securing with pins and using plenty of hairspray to keep the shape as it was being built. Using a bristle brush covered with hairspray to brush lightly over the sleek sides and the surface of the updo keeps stray hairs in place and adds shine.

Danilo used Pantene Pro-V Volume & Body mousse, £2.99, to create body and Repair & Protect Serum, £3.99, to keep ends smooth as he was dressing. He also recommends adding in pinned jewels to ensure the style looks even glitzier.
