When Anne Hathaway first chopped her long brunette locks for a film role, she admitted it was a traumatic experience that left her "inconsolable".A year on, the actress who now has an Oscar award to her name after her terrific performance in Les Miserables has also been voted as having the most influential on-screen hairstyle.

The poll of 1,000 people was conducted by the Hairdressing Council of Great Britain and Universal Pictures and placed Jennifer Aniston's naturally beachy waves from Along Came Polly in second place. Coming in a close third was Audrey Hepburn's 'do in the 1963 film Charade. The brunette beauty was also well known for her Breakfast at Tiffany's beehive and the dramatic pixie crop which the actress adopted for her role in the 1953 film, Roman Holiday.

The influence of film on women's style comes as no surprise to red carpet expert and renowned hairstylist, Charles Worthington, famous for tending to the tresses of some of Hollywood’s A-listers.

“Film can inspire people to do many things and in particular change the way they look," he said, adding that "The versatility of Jennifer Aniston's cut ensures it appeals to so many people while there really is nothing like an up do for that Hollywood glamour as sported by Hepburn.A night in perfecting the look yourself with friends while the DVD that inspired the style is on the TV makes for a perfect night in.”From Uma Thurman's Pulp Fiction bob to Julia Roberts' Pretty Woman scarlet curls and Kirsten Dunst's extravagant weave for her part as the lavish French queen Marie Antoinette, take a look back at some of the most iconic on-screen hairstyles to date…
