How to master your at-home blow-dry

Get a salon-worthy look at home

by hellomagazine.com

An at-home blow-dry is so much cheaper, and more convenient, than hitting the salon, and good news; it's actually not that difficult to do yourself! Hollywood beauty Priyanka Chopra previously put her bouncy tresses down to having her hair blown out every day, so how can we go about getting a similar finish without having a movie star budget? Here are some top tips on how to get a voluminous finish.

STORY: How to protect your hair from humidity

Get the perfect products in place before anything; we suggest the likes of Big Sexy Hair Blow Dry Volumizing Gel, L'Oreal Professionnel Tecni Art Full Volume Extra Mousse or Philip Kingsley Styling Maximizer, all of which you apply to towel-dried hair before heat. Getting as much moisture out of your hair is key as you won't be able to get a lightweight finish with lots of water in your locks.

Step 1: Section your hair

Horizontally divide your hair at the back and clip or pin up the upper layer. Don't leave too much down as you want to ensure the hair dryer covers the area without any spots being left.

Step 2: Get your brush ready

GHD, Tresemme and Dyson all have amazing hair dryers to choose from if you're in need of a new one – if not pick up your old reliable one and get drying. You'll need a firm, round brush to create volume and make sure the size caters to the thickness of your hair; thick locks go for a larger size while thinner hair should opt for a smaller build. Run the brush underneath your hair.

Step 3: Dry away

Wrap your hair up in the brush and apply the heat as you pull the tool down, keeping the dryer close to your locks but not so close that strands can get caught and damaged. Maximum heat will make sure it dries quicker and not lose any bounce during the process.

Step 4: Repeat

Keep up this move throughout the first layer of your hair and then unpin the sectioned area, dividing again if need be so you haven't got a heavy layer to dry. Continue to dry until you've reached the top of your head, when you can pull the brush up slightly while applying heat to give even more volume.

Step 5: Secure

Add a spritz of hairspray to ensure all your hard work doesn't go to waste and voila, you're done!
