How to go from blonde to brunette

Your hair transformation starts here

by hellomagazine.com

There's no better time than a change in season to switch-up your hair colour. Trendsetters such as Zoe Kravitz, Cara Delevingne and Miley Cyrus have all been showing off darker hair recently, and no doubt other names will soon be transforming from blonde to brunette. While a major dye job is always a scary prospect, celebrity hairstylist Phil Smith believes that the perfect shade has the ability to complement your complexion and enhance features. He recommends consulting with an expert hairstylist who can give advice on colour and tones.

"If your complexion is medium with warm undertones, a dark, chocolatey brown shade is the perfect choice for you," Phil told Cover Media. "For an olive skin tone, a lovely dark brown would be the ideal pairing, and a caramel hair colour would work for medium skin with cool tones."

Just as committing to a new look is a big decision, so is maintaining your fresh hue. From highlights to full head colour, be sure to investigate what process best aligns with your lifestyle. "Foils and lowlights are going to grow out more subtly, so if you're someone who can't get to the salon every six weeks, then low lights are perfect for you," the hair expert explained. "However, if you can get to the salon more regularly then you could go for an all over colour."

STORY: How to protect your hair colour for longer

Always remember the regrowth will be more obvious if you're opting for full colour, so consider buying a dry shampoo product, such Phil Smith Be Gorgeous Dry Clean Wow Brunette Dry Shampoo, to use in between salon visits. And while brown hair will look super shiny, remember that there will be a degree of fading. Minimise this by using products that have been formulated to seal in the pigment and retain its vibrancy. "Brunettes are known for fading quicker than any other colour, so make sure you invest in a really good shampoo and conditioner to help avoid colour fade!" added Phil.
