The stars pulled out all the stops for the BAFTAs on Sunday night, none more so than the Duchess of Cambridge who wowed fans in a bespoke Alexander McQueen gown. Kate didn't just top the best-dressed lists; she also upped the beauty stakes with her glossy brunette locks swept up into an elegant chignon.

And she wasn't the only star to give us major beauty inspiration: La La Land actress Emma Stone showed off her edgy side with a sleek semi updo, while Penelope Cruz rocked a chic layered bob. Star Wars' Daisy Ridley also proved that short hair can be styled into glamorous looks, opting for a slicked back lob, while actress Anya Taylor-Joy opted to wear her long, flowing blonde locks in a laidback chic low ponytail.

Although the A-list have a glam squad on hand to help them prepare for the red carpet, there are easy ways you can recreate the looks from the comfort of your own home – and celebrity hairstylist Jason Collier has shared some very handy tips and tricks for achieving that BAFTA-worthy finish.

The Duchess of Cambridge's volumised updo

"Of course Duchess Kate would choose something suitably regal for the occasion!" he says. "I loved this beautiful style, which felt very majestic but still managed to look modern. A great blow-dry and lots of rollers is what you need here; Kate is well-known for her voluminous curls and this look is no different."

1. Set the hair with rollers and blast dry before unwinding, and then backbrushing the top section and the crown to add extra oomph.

2. Part the hair slightly at the front for definition, and then scoop back into a kind of half up-do, leaving the bottom section loose.

3. Shape into a beehive style using a bristle brush and a fantail comb, before pinning into place, tucking the ends underneath.

4. With the bottom sections, wind the curls in on themselves to create fullness, and then tuck up under the beehive section for volume at the bottom as well as the top of the hair. Softly brush over the two sections to merge them and hide any gaps between the two.

5. Use plenty of grips and a great strong-hold glossing hairspray such as Label. M’s Hold & Gloss Spray, then finish with some spectacular earrings a la Kate.

Emma Stone's sleek semi updo

"Emma Stone stole the show at the BAFTAs in her incredible Chanel outfit, and I loved her choice of hairstyle," says Jason. "Her outfit was very embellished and intricate, so Emma wore those famous red tresses in a very sleek semi up-do, with a deep side parting and a very clean, simple finish which complemented the outfit perfectly."

1. To recreate Emma’s look, brush the hair through until totally smooth, and run straighteners over the lengths to get it looking super straight and slick.

2. Part the hair deep into the side, and section off the top layers, behind the ears to be pinned back like a traditional half up-do, with a glitzy clip or slide to fasten (and plenty of Kirby grips!). Just make sure that this section is completely smooth and bump-free like Emma’s, it needs to be totally sleek for this simple style.

3. The emphasis here is all on shine, so give your hair extra gloss with shine spray like Aveda’s Brilliant Spray-On Shine. Smooth away any flyaways with a bristle brush sprayed with hairspray and you’re all set!

Penelope Cruz's fringed lob

"My two favourite looks combined into one; I truly believe that every woman suits either a fringe or a lob – but if you’re genetically blessed like Penelope Cruz, you can rock them both together!" he reveals. "This was a really sophisticated but sexy look for Penelope, perfect with that gorgeous gold gown."

1. I love that she chose to wear it slightly messy, to hint at that bedhead kind of style but still kept it really glossy for the red carpet."

2. To get a similar effect, part your hair in the middle, even the fringe, and let it fall naturally. Blow-dry the hair smooth to get it straight without being flat, and softly turn it under at the ends for a really soft finished effect.

3.Don’t be afraid to muss it a little with your fingers – it all adds to that effortless look! Use a luxe hair oil on the ends to add gloss and softness for the perfect finished effect, I really like 72 Hair’s Repairing Oil.

Daisy Ridley's slicked back lob

"Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley chose something quite edgy for the red carpet, with a very cool slicked-back lob," explains Jason. "This shoulder-grazing style is perfect for Daisy’s delicate features; a long, fussy style would swamp her, so the way she’s worn her hair here is perfect for showing off that beautiful face!"

1. To steal her style, use a medium-barrel tong to create loose ringlet curls in the hair, and brush them through gently for softness.

2. Brush the hair back from the face, and hold in place with Bumble & bumble’s Styling Crème, to keep the hair set but without a wet-look or crispy finish.

Anya Taylor-Joy's loose low ponytail

"Everyone’s talking about Anya Taylor-Joy’s incredible blue Gucci gown this morning, but for me, her hair was the perfect accessory!" admits Jason. "Like Emma Stone, Anya chose a very detailed outfit, and with a fussy hairstyle, it could be in danger of all looking a little too frou-frou, a little overdone. She’s been very clever in choosing a really low-key hairstyle that allows the dress to shine – and sometimes this is exactly what has to happen, especially on the red carpet."

1. If you are planning on wearing a very detailed dress anytime soon, take a tip from Anya and try a loose, low ponytail to let your outfit do the talking.

2. Part the hair in the middle and brush it through until it’s really smooth; unless your hair is particularly frizzy or you’re naturally curly, I wouldn’t straighten it – just smooth with a hairdryer if it really needs it.

3. Pull back into a really loose, low ponytail at the nape of the neck and fasten, et voila! A pared-back style that will complement your look beautifully.
