Blinking beautiful – use your lashes for high impact

Princess Eugenie is just one of the stars giving us an eyeful

Princess Eugenie stepped out of the shadows with a shocking-pink pair of false eyelashes as she celebrated her A-level results at a London club. False lashes have long been mainstream, with fans from Cheryl Cole to Tess Daly wearing them as part of their daily beauty routines and Brits spending more than £10 million a year on their falsies.

And they have been becoming increasingly dramatic, too, with experts from Shu Uemera to Eylure introducing lashes made from feathers, lace and decorated with diamonds. But it's a look that has to be balanced with the rest of the face: get the ultimate result by pairing with daring eyeshadow, vivid lips, noticeably blushing cheeks and heavily defined brows. Slicked-back hair goes beautifully with ostentatious lashes, too, allowing them to take centre stage.

Our favourites for a night out requiring full-blown theatrical glamour come from Eylure, particularly Black Widow, £8, which are dark and therefore easier to wear, with a lacy root that makes lashes look fuller and eyes more dramatic. Far more glitzy are the feathers of Strut, £12.50, the stars of Elysian Fields, £6.50, and Flutterby's fun colour combo. All are available from Superdrug.
