…and there's plenty of backstage beauty gossip, too

To show off her hair to maximum effect Mel B used gold highlighter for a glowing complexion at the MOBOs

You might think the backstage beauty retreats at music industry events would be a haven of peace amid the chaos of talent and technicians trying to put on a slick show. But from what we hear from last night's MOBOs, it's where all the gossip was originating.

Jamelia claimed to be starting a new trend when she appeared on-stage with only three nails painted – a result of having to rush out of the beauty retreat without finishing her manicure.

Meanwhile, Olympic gold medallist James DeGale seemed pleased to find Dr Bragi's Intensive Treatment Mask when he heard it acts as a remedy for tired and hungover skin. And Desperate Housewives actor Jesse Metcalfe grabbed one for himself, too.

Then there was presenter Mel B, who found time to have her nails painted in Black Beth – named after singer Beth Ditto – from Marian Newman's Inkredibles range of polishes, which dry in 60 seconds.

Mel looked particularly radiant on the night, going for neutral skin to allow her gravity-defying hairstyle to grab all the attention.

The secret of Mel's glowing complexion was gold highlighter, which works brilliantly on black skin, making sure light is attracted to the face and then bouncing if off again to get rid of unflattering shadows.

Mel had highlighter brushed down and across her face in a cross shape – from the centre of her forehead, down her nose, onto her chin and across the nose towards the cheeks and under the eyes. This works for Mel because her nose is straight but as highlighter attracts attention, it should probably be avoided on any less-than-perfect sections of the face.

This method of application ensures light is attracted to the centre of the face, making the most of eyes and teeth. A pop of colour applied high to the apples of the cheeks adds balance to the 'golden girl' effect.
