When celebrities like Beyonce Knowles, Paris Hilton and Jennifer Lopez walk down the red carpet, they let their eyes do the talking, making it difficult not to desire their long, lush lashes.
Getting eyelash extensions, however, can be both time-consuming and costly.
For example, every three months Beyonce has a new full set applied for about £320, and monthly upkeep costs another £75. Replacement of a single lash can run up to about £12.
So what is it about eyelash extensions that has made it one of the latest beauty crazes despite the expense?
Extensions are applied with an adhesive that dries soft, allowing lashes to stay flexible and natural-looking. Because they are bonded to each individual lash instead of your skin, they can last up to two months and fall out when your natural lash does.
To maintain the look, however, a touch-up every two to three weeks is necessary to replace any eyelashes that have fallen out.
The most important thing about getting extensions is working with a licensed professional, as mistakes can lead to the loss of natural lashes.
Less expensive options
Those who wish to imitate the dramatic eyes of their favorite celebrities without spending much money can turn to two products.
For less than £25, you can get the look of long, lush lashes with Magic Lash (available online) or Fiberwig (found at Sephora). Both work with mascara, last one day and come off with makeup remover.
All extension procedures and products are semi-permanent, but there is another process for those looking for something more long-lasting.
For about £3,200, you can have an eyelash transplant, which is similar to a regular hair transplant, and is performed under anaesthesia by a qualified doctor.
