Carey Mulligan went for the most popular trend of the night, barely there lip colour in a neutral shade but with just enough gloss to shine

While Sandra Bullock was one of a few actresses to ring the changes with a slash of vivid colour across her lips
Glamour was particularly sophisticated, if a little subdued, on the red carpet at the Oscars, with pared down make-up and simple hairstyles allowing those dresses to do all the talking. Take a look at the key trends...
Muted lips - It seems like almost everyone, from Hilary Swank, Mariah Carey and SJP to Carey Mulligan, Miley Cyrus and Zoe Saldana went for muted lips – pale browns and beiges, with a glossy finish. Try Bobbi Brown Rich Color Gloss in Pink Buff.
Flashes of colour - That said, there were the odd flashes of colour – fuschias and reds – worn slashed across the lips by Sandra Bullock, Vera Farmiga, Cameron Diaz, Charlize Theron and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Try The Body Shop Lip Colour in Brilliant Red and Maybelline ColorSensational in Ruby Star.
Shoulder cleavage - Decolletes were given the night off as shoulders took centre stage in de rigueur strapless dresses. Skin needs to be super smooth for this look, exfoliated and moisturised and then slicked with highlighter. Try Fresh Twilight Freshface Glow.
Simple styles - There seemed to be two choices for hair – down, in vintage Hollywood, Veronica Lake-inspired waves dressed to the side, or tied back in a bun.
Smokin’ eyes - Lids were either kept nude, like lips, or darkly ringed and winged out, creating almond shaped eyes – see Victoria Beckham, Miley Cyrus and SJP. The simplest way to achieve a similar effect without the faff is to rim around eyes on the inner and outer lids with black kohl.
