Lily Cole's model behaviour has become infectious this year after the launch of her cruelty-free range of make-up for The Body Shop. Now more women than ever are becoming concerned over the ethical quality of their beauty products.

The British supermodel and actress told the Telegraph that her main concern is "when you buy something you are not knowingly or unknowingly causing someone else's suffering in the world".But, of course, many of these ingredients can impact the people using them too.Sustainable living isn't just about recycling, or buying organic foods. What you put on your skin can affect your body just as much as what you put into it. Miranda Bond, Co-founder of mineral make-up brand INIKA, contributes her own journey to a healthier lifestyle – personally overcoming infertility and illness – to having switched to using only vegan products.

It stands to reason that the more organic your make-up, the better it will be for your skin. And  you don't have to worry that natural ingredients will result in poor effects. Part of Miranda's motto is to produce "colour that cares" in a range of vibrant and opulent eyeshadows, rich in pigment, which last all day. It's easy to find out which brands are sourcing their ingredients responsibly. Many can be found in your local drugstore – simply look out for signs such as the internationally-recognised Leaping Bunny logo on the packaging to show they are cruelty-free, toxic-free, organic or vegan.

All plastic packaging from Lush is made with 100% post-consumer recycled waste to start with but they will also take back used boxes to refill them. And many other companies are following suit with aims on cutting down on their packaging, such as Aveda, who are now accepting a bottle cap-recycling policy which even accepts product waste from other companies.
