Winged eyeliner has been an enduring trend when it comes to red carpet beauty looks. Yet at the recent Met Gala, stars such as Candice Swanepoel and Lily-Rose Depp managed to step up the classic cat eye a notch, by opting for an even bolder version.

When it comes to achieving this graphic look, Lord & Berry make-up artist Abbi-Rose Crooks, suggests using an inky black felt tip liner such as Lord & Berry's Perfecto, as pencil is more likely to smudge. “Apply the outer flick first, follow the shape of your lower eye line, and extend this outward, not from the top eyelid as this will always be even and balanced,” she told Cover Media.

“The line should be thin in the inner corner and become thicker towards the middle and outside edge and finish in a pointed tip. If you are as brave as Candice, the black line should take up to half of the whole eyelid.” If you are worried about drawing a neat line, try adding a thin piece of masking tape to the corner of the eye to measure where the winged angle should extend. To really amp up the feline-inspired look, layer on a black mascara such as Lancome's Hypnose to give full, fluttery lashes.

When trying out strong eye make-up, Abbi-Rose recommends keeping the rest of your make-up natural, and simply applying a little oil-free foundation to smooth out the complexion, while contouring the cheekbones with a little bronzer or rose-hued matte blush, like MAC's Powder Blush in Pink Swoon.

“Groom the brows fully to direct gaze towards the eyes, use a pencil such as Lord & Berry Magic Brow pencil,” the make-up expert explained. “This contains three marbleised colours to ensure a natural looking brow. Apply in small strokes to mimic hairs, and finish and set in place with the Glacee Brow mascara, which gives a modern sheen to the brow.”

Top off the look with a swipe of pink-toned lipstick, such as Charlotte Tilbury's Kissing lipstick in Nude Kate.
