"When L'Oréal Paris and [Brand Global President Cyril Chapuy] first approached me, I was so flattered," the actress said in a statement. "The brand has always been a leader in helping in the empowerment and development of women."

Susan also admitted that she was attracted to the cosmetics brand because of their "powerful statement" and iconic slogan.

"The very first time I heard 'Because I'm worth it', it definitely was a shift in the framing of why you should look good," she explained. "It had to do with women becoming the master of their own lives and decisions. It's an extremely powerful statement that has transcended time."

Susan, who will be celebrating her milestone 70th birthday later this year, also opened up about ageing and revealed she is excited to embrace what it has to offer.

"I look forward to being older," she confessed. "When what you look like becomes less and less an issue, and what you are is the point."

The star joins a line-up of brand ambassadors including Dame Helen Mirren

The auburn-haired beauty joins an already impressive line-up of brand ambassadors including Blake Lively, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Julianne Moore, Jane Fonda, Karlie Kloss and Doutzen Kroes.

Last year also saw Dame Helen Mirren joining the label ahead of her 70th birthday, like Susan – marking the first time she lent her face to a beauty campaign.

"To do a beauty campaign at my age is a bit sort of out of order really," she said during an appearance on ITV's Good Morning Britain. "I think you don't lose interest as a woman – or maybe as a man – we don't lost interest in these things as we get older, all we do is get more knowledge about them."

"We get more knowledge about what’s good for you, what’s bad for you, what works for you, what doesn’t work for you and so I don’t see why as an older person you should be excluded from the fun of all of that."

L'Oréal Paris celebrated the news of Susan's appointment on their Twitter page with a behind-the-scenes video of the photoshoot for her first campaign. "Extremely proud to welcome @susansarandon A true Woman of Worth #WorthIt #NoFilter," they wrote.
