There was a time when Angelina Jolie could lay claim to the title of Hollywood's wildest bad girl. True to form, however, when a new direction came into the beautiful actress' life it took the form of a total sea change.
These days the Lara Croft star is a dedicated mum who combines caring for a family of six with charitable commitments around the globe.
There has always been more to the star than her bee-stung lips and headline-grabbing personal life.
Her on-screen talent has brought three Golden Globes, a best supporting actress Oscar in 2000 for playing a charismatic sociopath in Girl, Interrupted, and a further best actress nomination from the Academy for Changeling in 2009.
She was born in LA on June 4, 1975, to actor Jon Voight and former model and actress Marcheline Bertrand. Angelina and her older brother James were raised in New York by their mother after their father left.
Aged 11, she won a place to study at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute. Appearances in music videos for the Rolling Stones and Lenny Kravitz led to small film parts, and in 1995 she landed her first starring role in cyber-thriller Hackers.
On set she met her first husband, British actor Jonny Lee Miller. The bride walked down the aisle wearing black rubber trousers and a white shirt with the groom's name written on it in her own blood.
Her 2000 wedding to Pushing Tin co-star Billy Bob Thornton proved equally unconventional. Following a whirlwind romance they made their vows at a Las Vegas chapel dressed in jeans and with Angelina sporting a Billy Bob tattoo on her arm.
She shrugs off criticism of her actions, saying: "If I make a fool of myself, who cares? I'm not frightened by anyone's perception of me."
A year later Angelina adopted a seven-month-old Cambodian orphan, Maddox. Afterwards, the couple's lives seemed to drift apart and in July 2002 she filed for divorce.
Following the break up the actress immersed herself in her career and charity work. A UN goodwill ambassador since 2001 she has criss-crossed the world on behalf of the organisation, drawing attention to refugees and the poor.
In 2005 she added to her family by adopting a little Ethiopian girl called Zahara.
At the beginning of 2005 a new man came into her life, both on screen and off, when she appeared in Mr & Mrs Smith with Brad Pitt, then still married to Friends actress Jennifer Aniston.
When Brad's marriage ended, he begun to be snapped squiring his on-screen partner on several continents.
Shortly afterwards the news broke that Angelina was expecting his baby, and publicists' for both parties confirmed what fans had long since suspected - the pair were a couple.
The brunette beauty denied that their relationship had begun while he was still with Jen.
"To be intimate with a married man, when my own father cheated on my mother, is not something I could forgive," she said. "I could not look at myself in the morning, if I did that."
Their daughter, Shiloh Nouvel, was born in May 2006 in Namibia. That same year, the Hollywood hunk adopted Maddox and Zahara.
The family grew again in March 2007 when the couple adopted Vietnamese orphan Pax Thien, then four. There was more happy news in July 2008 when the actress gave birth to twins Knox and Vivienne in the south of France.
In 2012, her partner proposed with a $500,000 diamond band he designed himself citing pressure from their children.
The couple have turned out to be one of Hollywood's enduring love stories, weathering everything from the loss of her mother to ovarian cancer to Angelina's double mastectomy.
The actress had the operation as a preventive measure following the discovery that she has a 'faulty' gene that would make her likely to develop breast cancer.
With Brad by her side, Angelina has been able to fulfil her manifesto for life.
"Love one person, take care of them until you die. You know, raise kids. Have a good life. Be a good friend,"is how she explains her personal philosophy.
"And try to be completely who you are. And figure out what you personally love. And like go after it with everything you've got no matter how much it takes."
In August 2014 Brad and Angelina married in a simple and intimate ceremony in their French home, Château Miraval. The bride wore a breathtaking wedding gown by Atelier Versace and a veil which was embroidered with artwork by the couple's children. The pair told HELLO!: "It was important to us that the day was relaxed and full of laughter. It was such a special day to share with our children and a very happy time for our family."
