Pressures of army life drove them apart say Harry's friends

A New Year's holiday in romantic Mauritius could not put off what friends now say was the inevitable conclusion to Prince Harry's relationship with Chelsy Davy.

The pretty Zimbabwean-born law student had apparently been weighing up the future of her five-year romance with the soldier Prince for some time - and decided the pressures on them were becoming unbearable.

Harry's recent decision to embark on an intensive two-year helicopter pilot training course meant he would have little time to see the 23-year-old.

"He knows he needs to knuckle down with his military career while Chelsy is taking her finals this year and wants to forge ahead with hers," said a source speaking to the Daily Mail.

There have been cooling off periods before – they briefly split in 2007 – though this time Chelsy, who is taking a postgraduate course at Leeds, has changed her relationship status to single on social networking site Facebook.

For his part, Harry has made it known to his circle that although they "love each other to bits", ending their romance was "absolutely the right thing to do".

Right up until recently Harry and his Zimbabwean girlfriend Chelsy have appeared to be very much in love, but friends say the determination of both of them to pursue their separate careers got in the way of a lasting relationship
