Speculation builds Queen will be watching from royal box if Andy Murray makes final

by hellomagazine.com The last time a British singles champion set foot on Centre Court during a Wimbledon final, the Queen was watching.

Then Virginia Wade was the lucky player receiving royal backing and it did the trick as she clinched the 1977 ladies' title, in a thrilling three-set battle against Dutch player Betty Stove.

Now speculation is increasing that should Andy Murray make it through to the final, the monarch will attend the match.

The Scotsman's revelation on Twitter that he'd received a message from Buckingham Palace wishing him luck this week adds weight to suggestions that the Queen will take her place in the royal box.

A palace spokesman refused to comment on the reports, saying: "It's pure speculation at this point".

The British number one is hoping to become the first British man to lift the All England Club trophy since Fred Perry in 1936.
