She was trying to keep in the background at what is normally a rather staid event.
But Tory leader David Cameron's wife Samantha found herself in the limelight at the party conference because of her outfit, an M&S dress, costing just £65.
Much was also made of her husband's moving tribute to her.
"I know what sustains me the most," he told supporters. "She is sitting right there and I'm incredibly proud to call her my wife."
He also referred to the tragic loss of the couple's disabled son Ivan earlier this year.
"When such a big part of your life suddenly ends nothing else – nothing outside – matters," he said.
While the politician was making these highly personal remarks about his family life, fashion commentators were busy analysing Samantha's sartorial choices.
Her use of high-street pieces garnered praise, particularly the vintage style M&S polka dot number worn for the speech.
The 38-year-old teamed it with £29 Zara heels that also made an appearance on the first day of the conference.
They were then paired with a blush-pink blouse from Cos, described as the high street fashion store for the "thinking woman" and a large patent waist belt from Jaeger.
Another winner was the grey jumper from trendy Japanese chain Uniqlo, worn with James jeans, which was seen as a sign that the political wife isn't afraid to go casual.
