First look at Samantha Cameron's baby bump as she vows to continue campaigning

23 MARCH 2010

Beaming Samantha Cameron's joy was apparent last night as she returned home following the official confirmation she is expecting a baby. And the beginnings of a bump were just visible under her silk maroon top.

As she made her way home the 38-year-old brunette said she was “very, very delighted as you can imagine”. And when asked if she was suffering morning sickness, she replied: "Yes."

The happy news was announced on Monday afternoon, just over a year after Samantha and her husband, Conservative leader David Cameron, lost their eldest son Ivan. He died, aged six, in February last year.

Since that family tragedy, Mr Cameron has dropped numerous hints that he would like another baby. According to his aides the couple – who are also parents to Nancy, six, and Elwen, four – have been trying for a baby for some time.

Samantha plans to go ahead with her plans to campaign for her husband in the run up to the general election. She will take part in two events each week when campaigning begins in a couple of weeks time.

The new baby will arrive in September, and the couple have expressed their desire for the little one to be delivered in an NHS hospital.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah were "very pleased" to hear the news, says an Number 10 rep, who added: "They will be sending a message of best wishes to them."
