Sarah and her elder daughter Princess Beatrice were out at separate functions this week in the UK and America.
The fifty-year-old Duchess put on a brave face in the wake of the incident as she attended a US book fair by jokingly mentioning she had written a book on 'stranger danger'.
"Actually, when I was going to talk to you about my books, I suddenly realised that maybe I should take a leaf out of my own books," she informed the audience at Book Expo America.
"My books say they are 'helping hand' books. And one of my books is Ashley learns about strangers."
She then paused, looking up at the crowd, who burst into laughter, and added: "Or Matthew and the bullies. Hmm."
Sarah was promoting her series of children's books which offer advice on personal and emotional issues. At one point she seemed again to allude to her problems when introducing a fellow author.
She said: "In his books, he tries to give readers lead characters they can look up to and leads us to believe that problems actually can be solved. I think I'll read it immediately. I love the way you talk about forgiveness."
Meanwhile back in the UK, Princess Beatrice's smile didn't falter for a moment as she attended a fundraiser with her boyfriend Dave Clarke.
The loved-up pair were guests The Reuben Foundation Haiti Fundraiser in London to raise funds for those affected by the country's earthquake.
Super-svelte in a black dress and matching blazer with accentuated shoulders, Beatrice's newfound confidence since losing a stone and a half really shone through.
