The upmarket Spanish resort of Marbella was abuzz with excitement on Wednesday as first lady Michelle Obama arrived with her younger daughter Sasha.
The mother-daughter team touched down in Air Force Two, accompanied by a reported 70 secret service agents. They will spend four days in Marbella.
Michelle was spotted out in the town's historic centre clad in a funky one-shouldered monochrome top and baggy black pants. She smiled widely as she strolled past local shops, including some selling tourist souvenirs and 'I love Marbella' t shirts.
During their time in the Costa del Sol town, Michelle and nine-year-old Sasha will be staying at the Hotel Villa Padierna - a five-star Ritz-Carlton resort.
It boasts outdoor and indoor swimming pools, plus three golf courses and two tennis courts – perfect if they're feeling active.
For a bit of pampering, there's also a hair salon, a 21,000-square-foot spa with eight themed baths and two saunas.
While half of the first family were unwinding in Spain, Barack Obama turned 49 back in the US.
He spoke at an AFL-CIO labour federation meeting in Washington, telling attendees that "it's good to spend my birthday with some good friends," but that "the Secret Service nixed the cake".
The White House spokesman said the president would probably spend the evening of his birthday having dinner with friends in Chicago.
His elder daughter Malia is at a summer camp in the US.
