Now, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has all but confirmed rumours that she's expecting at the age of 43 – by saying she can't talk about the topic.
The comments came when six readers of Le Parisien newspaper were invited to the Elysee Palace to interview the wife of President Nicolas Sarkozy.
Asked by one directly if she is pregnant, the Premiere Dame declined to answer.
"If you'll allow me, I'd rather not answer these questions about my family.
"I'd love to talk to you woman to woman about my family life, my personal dreams – and I'm really a very chatty person.
"But on this subject, I'm going to keep quiet. Not through arrogance or because I like keeping secrets.
"I am remaining tight-lipped about that to protect something and to protect all the work that my husband does."
She went on: "I would really like to talk about it, but then it would take over everything else.
It would be the first child for the former supermodel and her husband, who married in 2008 after a whirlwind courtship.
Carla has a son from nine-year-old Aurelien from a relationship with philosopher Raphael Enthoven.
He added fuel to the speculation by saying in an interview: "I am the father of Carla Bruni's oldest son" – suggesting that there may be another on the way.
