The Duke of Edinburgh is now the longest serving consort in British history, having supported the Queen since her coronation in 1953.
A bluff, no-nonsense character, the war veteran commands a significant place in the public imagination. He is celebrated for his unique turn of phrase and tireless work for good causes.
To mark the 90th birthday of the man the Queen described as "quite simply my strength and stay", we celebrate his life in pictures.
Many of the images are currently on display at Windsor Castle in an exhibition specially commisioned for the occasion.
It includes photos, mementos, and art work covering his birth into the Greek royal family to his current life.
There are also pieces painted by Prince Philip himself and it runs through to January 2012.
