Brave Queen Beatrix works through her personal tragedy

Greeting well-wishers during her latest royal engagement, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands looks as focused on the job at hand as ever.

You could never tell that this consummate professional is working through her own personal tragedy.

The monarch continues her duties while the second of her three sons, Prince Johan Friso, fights for his life in a coma.

Tragedy struck her family in February when 43-year-old Friso was buried under an avalanche whilst skiing off-piste in Austria.

For weeks, Beatrix kept a bedside vigil, but with her son now in London for long-term care – the queen pushes on with public life.

These recent images came as she opened a Dutch design exhibition in Germany, where she was joined by her neighbouring country's president, Joachim Gauck.

And on April 30 she will again put on a brave face for the celebration of Queen's Day.
