Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands: Relive her grandest moments

by hellomagazine.com With the announcement that Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands is to abdicate the throne, the whole world will look back on the key moments that stand out from her 33-year reign. Those moments will doubtless include her wedding and coronation.

Things began on a bittersweet note for Beatrix; In 1980, her mother Queen Juliana stepped down in favour of her eldest daughter. Five months later, Beatrix was crowned amidst angry protests over the large sums being spent on the ceremony at a time when Amsterdam was suffering from a housing shortage.

By her side throughout the testing day was Prince Claus, whom she wed as the German diplomat, Claus von Amsberg in a lavish ceremony on 10 March 1966. The couple went on to welcome three sons – Prince Willem-Alexander, Johan Friso and Constantijn Christof. Prince Claus passed away in 2002, at the age of 76.

However his wife carried on their legacy, which she will now proudly pass to their eldest son, Crown prince Willem-Alexander.
