Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III's royal wedding: a look back

This Saturday, 19 April, marks what would have been Prince Rainier III and Grace Kelly's 58th wedding anniversary.

To remember to special ocassion, HELLO! Online takes a look back at one of Monaco's most iconic weddings. Attended by around 600 guests and watched by an estimated 30 million on television, it was dubbed "the wedding of the century".

The Hollywood beauty met Rainier during the Cannes Film Festival and eight months later, the couple were engaged. The lovebirds tied the knot on 19 April, 1956, in Monte Carlo, in a church ceremony and a civil ceremony the day before, as was customary in Monaco.

The bride's wedding gown was a gift from the MGM film studios and featured a high collar, long sleeves, a fitted bodice and voluminous skirt, and was made of silk taffeta, tulle and 125-year-old Brussels rose point lace. 

Hollywood star Grace Kelly arrives at Saint Nicholas Cathedral for her wedding to Prince Rainier III in 1956, and is accompanied by her six bridesmaids in yellow silk organdie dresses. Among them was her sister Peggy, who acted as matron of honour. 

Celebrities and high-profile guests of the couple attend the wedding, including American actress Ava Gardner.

The royal newlyweds are driven through the streets of Monte Carlo in an open-top Rolls Royce convertible car following their wedding and wave to the thousands of well-wishers around them. 

Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace enjoy their wedding luncheon at the Palace's Court of Honour attended by 700 guests, and later cut their six-tier wedding cake using the prince's sword.

On April 18, 1956, the couple were legally wed in the baroque throne room in the Palace of Monaco in a civil ceremony attended by their close friends and family. 

Spectators, including young girls with American flags, flocked to the streets of Monte Carlo to wish the royal couple a joyous marriage.

Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III of Monaco in April, 1956. They remained happily married with three children, Princesses Caroline and Stephanie and Prince Albert, until Grace's death on September 14, 1982.
