Ant and Dec struck up a great relationship with Prince Charles while they were filming a documentary about his work with the Prince's Trust last year. However they have revealed they may have overstepped the boundaries when they had too much to drink while staying at the Prince's Scottish home.

The presenting duo were invited to stay at Dumfries House while filming ITV's When Ant & Dec Met the Prince: 40 Years of The Prince's Trust. They each invited their wives along for an evening of dinner and entertainment along with special guests that included Rod Stewart and his wife Penny Lancaster.

"It was the weirdest thing," the pair said during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show. "We thought it would be a massive place and we would stay in another wing but it is a house and we stayed in rooms next to Charles."

The Saturday Night Takeaway hosts ordered a couple of bottles of wine from the butler as a nightcap but ended up making a racket after getting drunk together.

"We then got drunk with our wives but we were very conscious that Charles was down the corridor so as we got louder every now and again one of us would go, 'Shush, he's in bed!'" they said. "It was very bizarre."

The presenting duo will host the Queen's 90th birthday celebrations in May

However it appears their host either didn't notice or didn't mind their late night antics, and put in a good word for the presenting duo with the Queen, as they are now presenting the coverage of her 90th birthday celebrations.

"Apparently she asked for us to do it," Ant and Dec said. "We don't really know how it happened but can only imagine she's called Charles and asked if he knew anyone that could do it? And he's said, 'I've just met a couple of lads who've been following me around for a year.'"

It was announced earlier this month that Ant and Dec will host The Queen's 90th Birthday Celebration, which will be broadcast live on ITV later this year.

This National Celebratory Event will take place in the presence of The Queen and will be hosted by Royal Windsor Horse Show in the private grounds of Windsor Castle.
