The Danish Royals have released two new portraits of Prince Henrik in honour of his birthday. The son of Prince Joachim and Princess Marie turned seven on Wednesday, and was photographed by Steen Brogaard ahead of his special day.

The images show Henrik looking relaxed in a patterned blue shirt, jeans and Converse trainers. One snap shows the youngster leaning forward and resting his head in his hands, while another sees the birthday boy sitting on a window ledge – presumably at his family home.

Prince Henrik of Denmark turned seven on Wednesday

Henrik is the ninth-in-line to the Danish throne and was last seen in public while celebrating his grandmother Queen Margarethe's 76th birthday in April. The monarch was surrounded by her nearest and dearest – including her eight grandchildren – as she greeted well-wishers from the balcony of Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen.

The royals took it in turns to pose on the balcony for family photos. Prince Frederik and Princess Mary first greeted the crowds with their four children, followed by Prince Joachim and Princess Marie who were joined by their children Prince Henrik and Princess Marie, along with Princes Nikolai and Felix – Joachim's two older sons from his first marriage.

Prince Henrik, known as the Count of Monpezat, has been described by his father as "extremely good-natured but can be stubborn". Speaking exclusively to HELLO! magazine at the time of Princess Marie's 40th birthday, the royal couple explained that they are determined to provide their children with as normal an upbringing as possible.

"We've always tried to bring them up so that they never feel different from other kids," Joachim said. "Of course, we have to teach them that there are times when they'll be on the balcony with their grandmother and there'll be a lot of photographers taking pictures of us. But that's just part of the position, something you live with."
