by Emmy Griffiths

To mark the end of the year of celebrations for the Queen's 90th birthday, Clarence House has released a previously unseen photograph of her Majesty with her eldest son and heir, the Prince of Wales.

The photograph was taken in May of this year in the White Drawing Room at Windsor Castle before the final night of the Queen's 90th birthday celebrations at the Royal Windsor Horse Pageant by famed photographer Nick Knight OBE.

Several photographs of the monarch with her family were released to celebrate the landmark birthday earlier this year. The photos, which were taken by Annie Leibovitz, were released on April 21, and include a photo of the royal with her husband Prince Philip, with her beloved corgis and dorgis Willow, Vulcan, Candy and Holly, with her daughter Princess Anne, and with several of her younger grandchildren and great grandchildren, including Mia Tindall, James, Viscount Severn, Lady Louise, Savannah and Isla Phillips, along with Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Buckingham Palace also released three never-before-seen snaps of her Majesty to mark the occasion, which show the Queen as a princess before her accession to the throne in 1952. In one photo she is sitting with her sister Princess Margaret and their father King George VI.

Prince Charles paid tribute to his mother on her birthday in the BBC documentary Elizabeth at 90 – A Family Tribute, where the first-in-line to the throne said: "As we celebrate her 90th birthday, she, like all of us, can reflect on a life that has inspired and encouraged millions of people in the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world. In many ways, it's a life that has defined our age."
