The Queen is looking for a new employee to handle her social media accounts, including Twitter. A job advertisement was placed on Buckingham Palace's official website, seeking a digital communications officer. The role will be based at the palace in central London, with an expected starting salary of £30,000 per annum. The successful candidate will be covering a maternity leave on a fixed term contract from March 2017 to February 2018.

The focus of the role is to find "new ways to maintain The Queen's presence in the public eye and on the world stage". This will mean managing and overseeing the daily news flow on the royal family's website and their social media platforms. "Whether you're covering a state visit, award ceremony or royal engagement, you'll make sure our digital channels consistently spark interest and reach a range of audiences," the job description read. "The reaction to our work is always high-profile, and so reputation and impact will be at the forefront of all you do. And having your work shared around the world will be the biggest reward."

The Queen's official Twitter account, which uses the handle Royal Family, was set up in April 2009. It currently has 2.77m followers, while the Queen's official Instagram page has 656,000 followers. You might assume Her Majesty doesn't have her finger on the pulse of the latest digital trends, but she also has an official Facebook page and YouTube channel. Prince Charles and Camilla, meanwhile, have 604,000 followers on their official Twitter account, Clarence House; Prince William, Kate and Prince Harry use the Kensington Palace account, which boasts 825,000 followers.

The successful candidate for the Queen's new vacancy will have "good photography skills", be a "natural communicator with a genuine user focus" and be "educated to degree level with previous experience of managing websites". In return, the new communications officer can look forward to a comprehensive benefits package, 33 days annual leave including bank holidays and a 15 per cent employer contribution pension scheme. The closing date for the application is 14 February. The vacancy comes less than a year after the Queen's office advertised a similar role for head of digital entertainment.
