A portrait of a marriage: King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden
When Carl Gustaf became the king of Sweden, succeeding his grandfather at the tender age of 27 on September 15, 1973, he had already met his future queen.
One year earlier, while attending the 1972 Summer Games in Munich, he was introduced to a young woman by the name of Silvia Sommerlath, who was working there as an interpreter and hostess.
She brought happiness to a life that had seen tragedy with the death of his father when he was just seven-months-old and his subsequent childhood in a strict household.
Up until the publication of a biography detailing allegations of the sovereign's extra-marital liaisons there has been nothing to suggest that the two had anything other than a contented union
