She's used to royal banquets and fine dining but, just like many of us, it seems the Queen can't resist a cosy pub lunch. After spending Friday at the races, Her Majesty dropped into The Sheep Heid Inn in Edinburgh – leaving regular customers shocked.

According to reports, the Queen called an hour ahead before arriving with a "small royal party". They were given a window seat and are said to have ordered two portions of lamb rump, a seabass fillet, half a bottle of white wine and a martini.

The menu states that main meals are £16.50, although it's not clear what the Queen herself was eating.

The Sheep Heid Inn has been around for 650 years

While staff were reportedly told not to talk about Her Majesty's visit to the pub, one surprised customer left a detailed TripAdvisor review of their dinner date with royalty.

User RosC17 wrote: "What a lovely lady. Security guards everywhere but so unobtrusive that you hardly noticed them. What an honour for your excellent front of house and kitchen teams. We have enjoyed many visits to the Sheep Heid Inn, but this was particularly memorable. Five stars plus a gold star!"

The Queen and Prince Philip were up north for a day out at Musselburgh Racecourse

The Queen and husband Prince Philip had been at Musselburgh Racecourse earlier in the day to celebrate its 200th birthday. She wore a royal blue suit and hat for the occasion, and they watched from the VIP hospitality area.

While in Scotland Her Majesty stayed at Holyrood Palace. It's her official home while attending engagements up north, and she spends a week there at the beginning of each summer.

A Kensington Palace spokesperson would only confirm that the Queen dined "privately" on Friday evening.

Last year pop star Kelly Clarkson visited The Sheep Heid Inn and ordered beer and a portion of chunky chips.
