Madrid commuters were surprised to find themselves sharing the city's public transport system with Spain's most famous couple, Crown Prince Felipe and Crown Princess Letizia, the other day.

The popular royal couple were on an underground tour of the Madrid Metro's expansion scheme. They began their visit with an inspection of the new network of tunnels being laid down to ensure that ample transportation is included in the city's bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympics.

After the underground visit, the prince and his wife, like two everyday commuters, swiped their tickets and rounded the turnstiles as they joined the hustle and bustle of rush hour traffic for a ride to the Puerta del Sol, the centre of the Spanish capital.

Madrid is up against some stiff competition in their bid for the 2012 games as they face off against Moscow, Paris, London and New York. But residents in the bustling metropolis are confident that their city, with its historic architecture, modern sports facilities and chic ambiente is the ideal setting to showcase the sporting spectacular.
